Hello GNU webmasters,

I am forwarding a message below from Thérèse Godefroy (Cc'ed), who
took care of updating almost all French translations.
Can youp please review her proposed changes?

Hello,

Last summer, I got interested in philosophy/stallman-mec-india.html. It
looked like a very good primer on software patents, easy to read,
entertaining at times, and very informative. Unfortunately the quality
of the transcription is rather poor, which explains why this text has
never been translated.

1. Problems with the text itself

The punctuation is completely missing at places.
The grammar is rather shaky at places (not rms' fault I'm sure).
Some words are obviously missing.
Some words are transcribed phonetically, for instance:
  "handle" transcribed as "anger"
  "when a victim wanders by" transcribed as "when a victim wants to buy"
  "essential purpose" transcribed as "extensible purpose"
  "technical aspect" transcribed as "technical affect" (it took me a
while to figure that one)
   etc.

I did make some sense out of the whole thing, however, except for two
sentences.


2. Adding sections, anchors and table of contents/summary would make
reading easier. I had to make up my own to work on the translation. I
didn't change the text itself, but did move a few sentences from one
paragraph to another.

If you think that this text is worth improving, you may want to use the
attached files as a starting point. I'm ready to work on that according
to your needs.

I think yours is a good idea, a layout with a summary, titles and 
anchors may improve the readability of the page. You certainly did
the right thing by not changing the text, we should check that the 
transcription corresponds exactly to the original audio, and only 
fix typos. If some words cannot be heard or understood clearly, then
we could use blank: [...]. Perhaps it would also be desirable not 
to move sentences or paragraphs.

To build the summary, I think we could just extract text from the 
transcription itself and use it as titles for each section, as you 
have done in some cases. 

The summary would probably be better placed at the beginning of the
page instead of on the right. 

Just some thoughts, we should probably wait for other opinions.

Thanks for your helpful comments. I am especially pleased to learn that
the audio files do exist. As a matter of fact I had inquired about them
on the mec website. No reply so far.

I'm going to listen to those files. If the background is really bad, it
can probably be reduced somewhat with Audacity. The speech can also be
made slower without changing the pitch. I have done that once and it
really helps. Then we'll have some solid ground to build on. The problem
with this transcription is that you can't really trust what you read. It
may be right, or not.

The format doesn't have to stay that way. I have a wide screen and took
advantage of it to keep the summary static while the page was scrolled
down, to spare my mouse wheel.

I agree that we should try to use actual sentences for the summary.

About moving some sentences. The people who did the transcription were
the ones who made the paragraphs. I think they did a good job most of
the times, but not always.
