# Free Software Supporter
Issue 110, June 2017
Welcome to the Free Software Supporter, the Free Software Foundation's
(FSF) monthly news digest and action update -- being read by you and
145,836 other activists.

##Leaders needed for the International Day Against DRM
In the last year, the companies that profit from [Digital Restrictions
Management](https://www.defectivebydesign.org/what_is_drm_digital_restrictions_management)
(DRM) have continued trying to expand the system of law and technology
that weakens our security and curtails our rights.
But since the [last International Day Against
DRM](https://www.defectivebydesign.org/blog/help_us_envision_future_victories_wake_day_against_drm),
the [TPP trade
agreement](https://www.fsf.org/campaigns/trading-freedom)—a key
pro-DRM initiative—crashed and burned. Our allies at the Electronic
Frontier Foundation brought major
[legal](https://defectivebydesign.org/blog/lawsuit_could_be_beginning_end_drm)
and [regulatory
challenges](https://defectivebydesign.org/blog/digital_restrictions_inside_will_us_ftc_agree_label_drmencumbered_products)
against DRM in Washington, DC. And an unprecedented movement has risen
up against [an attempt to add DRM to Web
standards](https://defectivebydesign.org/blog/dialup_webs_inventor_online_security_and_rights).
On **Sunday, July 9**, 2017, we will channel this momentum into the
**[International Day Against DRM](https://dayagainstdrm.org).** We'll
be gathering, protesting, and making—showing the world that we insist
on a future without Digital Restrictions Management. **Will you be a
leader and get your community involved in the Day Against DRM? Visit
[dayagainstdrm.org](https://www.defectivebydesign.org/dayagainstdrm)
now to get involved.**

*From May 31st*
Our Spring Fundraising Mailing Envelope Stuff-A-Thon is coming up! WE
NEED YOU to make our Spring mailing a reality: it's THE key part of
the Spring fundraiser, which is integral to sustaining our efforts to
secure software freedom. Come to the FSF office and stuff envelopes

### As the Web's inventor flirts with disaster, Boston artists marched
against DRM
*From May 9th*
*
<https://www.defectivebydesign.org/blog/webs_inventor_flirts_disaster_boston_artists_are_putting_out_call_march_us_saturday>
As Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee considers allowing corporate interests
to change its underlying technology, extending their ability to
control users' computers with DRM (Digital Restrictions Management),
undermining Internet freedom, and exposing people to surveillance and
criminal threats online, people around the world are placing hundreds
of phone calls urging him not to allow the change. In May a small
artist-led group called Ethics in Tech took things to the next level
by marching to Berners-Lee's office in Cambridge, MA, to demand he
heed the call of human rights groups, tens of thousands of Web users,
and his fellow Web pioneers: reject DRM in Web standards and stand up
for the free, fair Web that everyone except a handful of big companies
wants.
### RMS comment on GPL enforcement
*From May 11th by Richard Stallman*
* <https://www.fsf.org/blogs/rms/rms-comment-on-gpl-enforcement>
Bradley Kuhn's talk at LibrePlanet 2017 on enforcing the GNU GPL at
the Software Freedom Conservancy explains the challenge of enforcing
the GPL against today's violators. The Conservancy provides various
kinds of administrative services for free software projects, while
promoting the free software ethical ideals and the use of copyleft. It
also does GPL enforcement for Linux and some other non-GNU,
GPL-covered software packages. In doing so, it undertakes a crucial
job. The FSF urges people to become supporters of the
[Conservancy](https://sfconservancy.org/supporter/).
### Reintroducing Theodore Teah - Copyright and Licensing Associate
*From May 5th*
*
<https://www.fsf.org/blogs/licensing/reintroducing-theodore-teah-copyright-and-licensing-associate>
I started with the Free Software Foundation (FSF) while completing my
doctoral course work in Sociology at Boston University, back in the
early 2000s. During those formative years, I learned the importance of
freedom when it comes to talking about software as the FSF copyright
assignment administrator and the Free Software Directory
maintainer. Leaving the FSF, I trained as a trial lawyer. I worked at
the Committee for Public Counsel Services, Children and Family Law
Program. Although I felt my work was important, something left me
longing. When the opportunity presented itself to return to the FSF I
jumped at it. As the copyright and licensing associate, I coordinate
all of the software copyright documents for the FSF. Also, I work on
analyzing discrepancies in copyright and generally working to ensure
the protection necessary for the enforceability of FSF
copyrights. This is a very exciting time for free software and I am
amped to be a part of it!
### The Licensing and Compliance Lab interviews the MegaGlest Project
*From April 27th*
*
<https://www.fsf.org/blogs/licensing/the-licensing-and-compliance-lab-interviews-the-megaglest-project-1>
This is the latest installment of our Licensing and Compliance Lab's
series on free software developers who choose GNU licenses for their
work. In this edition, we conducted an email-based interview with the
MegaGlest Project. MegaGlest, currently at version 3.12, is a free
software real-time strategy computer game set in a fantasy world,
mixing elements of re-imagined past civilizations, magic, and
steampunk.
### The Licensing and Compliance Lab interviews AJ Jordon of gplenforced.org
*From May 24th*
*
<https://www.fsf.org/blogs/licensing/the-licensing-and-compliance-lab-interviews-aj-jordon-of-gplenforced.org>
This is the latest installment of our Licensing and Compliance Lab's
series on free software developers who choose GNU licenses for their
work. In this edition, we interviewed AJ Jordon, the founder of
gplenforced.org, a project for hosting easy to use badges for copyleft
licenses. By using the badge, a project can share their values and the
importance of copyleft enforcement with all their users.
### Free software video streaming: HUBAngl powered LibrePlanet 2017
*From May 10th by David Testé*
*
<https://www.fsf.org/blogs/sysadmin/free-software-video-streaming-hubangl-powered-libreplanet-2017>
*This guest post by David Testé discusses the video streaming package
he debuted at LibrePlanet 2016, while a Free Software Foundation
(FSF) intern.* The new version was deployed at LibrePlanet
2017. During LibrePlanet 2016, the ABYSS package was used to
livestream sessions from the conference. This year, at LibrePlanet
2017, we used a new version of this free package...with a new
name. It's now called HUBAngl, which stands for HUBAngl Uses
Broadcaster Angle. HUBAngl was used for LibrePlanet 2017,
successfully streaming and recording around 50 sessions. Those
sessions are already available on the LibrePlanet's GNU MediaGoblin
instance.
### How the TC Heartland decision helps free software
*From May 23rd by Software Freedom Conservancy*
* <https://sfconservancy.org/blog/2017/may/23/tc-heartland/>
Yesterday, the United States Supreme Court published a decision that
is likely to make it harder for patent holders to use frivolous
infringement lawsuits to extort settlement fees. In the *TC Heartland
LLC v. Kraft Foods Group Brands LLC* case, the Court ruled that patent
holders can only file suit in the jurisdiction where the alleged
infringer is incorporated. Prior to *TC Heartland*, US patent holders
had more flexibility to file suit in multiple jurisdictions, and as a
result would often select seemingly unrelated jurisdictions for
strategic reasons.
### GNOME.Asia Summit 2017 to be hosted in Chongqing China
*From May 24th by GNOME.Asia*
*
<https://www.gnome.org/events/2017/05/gnome-asia-summit-2017-to-be-hosted-in-chongqing-china/>
The GNOME.Asia Committee is proud to announce that the upcoming
GNOME.Asia Summit 2017 will be hosted in Chongqing, China on October
14-October 16. GNOME.Asia Summit will provide great opportunities to
learn and exchange ideas about free technologies as well as to meet
and talk with other contributors and users face to face.
### Replicant 6.0 released
*From May 13th by Wolfgang Wiedmeyer*
* <https://blog.replicant.us/2017/05/replicant-6-0-released/>
Over the last one and a half years, a lot of work has been done to
move Replicant to a new version and to add new features. Everything
started with a forum post in January 2016 that documented the initial
efforts to get Replicant 6.0 somehow working on a Galaxy
S3. Development continued through the first half of 2016, however by
far most of the work was done from September 2016 onwards. As an
additional release goal, a complete wiki overhaul was completed over
the last two months. Besides updating outdated pages and a general
cleanup, a lot of new documentation is now available for users and
developers alike. We hope the new release will attract more
developers, so that we can tackle some of the tasks we have been
facing for a long time. If you want to support Replicant, please visit
<https://my.fsf.org/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=19>.
### GNU Guix and GuixSD 0.13.0 released
*From May 22nd by Ludovic Courtès*
*
<https://www.gnu.org/software/guix/news/gnu-guix-and-guixsd-0.13.0-released.html>
We are pleased to announce the new release of GNU Guix and GuixSD,
version 0.13.0! The release comes with GuixSD USB installation images,
a virtual machine image of GuixSD, and with tarballs to install the
package manager on top of your GNU/Linux distro, either from source or
from binaries. GNU Guix is a transactional package manager for the GNU
system. The Guix System Distribution or GuixSD is an advanced
distribution of the GNU system that relies on GNU Guix and respects
the user's freedom. If you want to support GUIX, please visit
<https://www.gnu.org/software/guix/donate/>.
### May Free Software Directory meeting recaps

### Join the FSF and friends in updating the Free Software Directory
Tens of thousands of people visit directory.fsf.org each month to
discover free software. Each entry in the Directory contains a wealth
of useful information, from basic category and descriptions to version
control, IRC channels, documentation, and licensing. The Free Software
Directory has been a great resource to software users over the past
decade, but it needs your help staying up-to-date with new and
exciting free software projects.
To help, join our weekly IRC meetings on Fridays. Meetings take place
in the #fsf channel on irc.freenode.org, and usually include a handful of
regulars as well as newcomers. Everyone's welcome.
The next meeting is Friday, June 2nd from 12pm to 3pm EDT (16:00 to
19:00 UTC). Details here:
* <https://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Free_Software_Directory:Meetings>
### LibrePlanet featured resource: Teams
Every month on LibrePlanet, we highlight one resource that is
interesting and useful -- often one that could use your help.
For this month, we are highlighting LibrePlanet teams, which are part
of a global network of groups organized by geographical region or
school all working together for free software in accordance with the
LibrePlanet project's mission statement and code of conduct. The
LibrePlanet wiki is here to leverage that vast network of free
software communities and provide the infrastructure to catalogue them
all and build a network of support around them. You are invited to
adopt, spread and improve this important resource -- Join an existing
team or start a new one today!
* <https://libreplanet.org/wiki/LibrePlanet:Teams>
Do you have a suggestion for next month's featured resource? Let us
know at <campaigns AT fsf.org>.
