The Free Software Foundation opens nominations for the 17th annual Free Software Awards

Nominations are now open for the 17th annual Free Software Awards. Submit your nomination forthe Award for the Advancement of Free Software and the Award for Projects of Social Benefit by the deadline of November 16th, 2014 at 23:59 UTC.

Matthew Garrett joins Free Software Foundation board of directors

From October 16th

Matthew Garrett joined the Free Software Foundation's board of directors. Matthew has generously donated his time and expertise to advise the FSF on many issues in recent years, especially Restricted Boot and other disconcerting trends at the intersection of hardware and proprietary software distribution.

The Licensing and Compliance Lab interviews Jessica Tallon of PyPump

From October 30th

This is the latest installment of our Licensing and Compliance Lab's series on free software developers who choose GNU licenses for their works.

In this edition, we conducted an email-based interview with Jessica Tallon, the lead developer PyPump, a simple but powerful and pythonic way of interfacing with the pump.io API, which is licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public License version 3 or, at your option, any later version.

Registration is now open for LibrePlanet 2015: "Free Software Everywhere," March 21-22, 2015 in Cambridge, MA

LibrePlanet is an annual conference for free software enthusiasts. The conference brings together software developers, policy experts, activists, and computer users to learn skills, share accomplishments, and face challenges to software freedom. Newcomers are always welcome, and LibrePlanet 2015 will feature programming for all ages and experience levels.

SSL, POODLE, and you

From October 16th

A new vulnerability, known as "Padding Oracle On Downloaded Legacy Encryption" (POODLE), has been discovered in the SSL protocol. The flaw, which only affects the SSL 3.0 protocol, makes traffic vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks. We have dropped support for SSL 3.0 on fsf.org and gnu.org until a fix is released.

In this guest post from Shauna Gordon-McKeon, who spoke at LibrePlanet 2014, Shauna calls on people to submit session proposals for LibrePlanet 2015.

A victory for free software over the "Microsoft tax"

From October 24th

The Italian Supreme Court (Corte di Cassazione) issued a judgment that bans the "Microsoft tax," a commercial practice that discourages users from converting their PCs to GNU/Linux or other free operating systems. In this guest post Marco Ciurcina, a lawyer who worked on the case, discusses the impacts of this ruling on Italian computer users.

Munich sticks with Free Software

On Tuesday, Munich's first mayor finally reacted to an inquiry by the Green Party related to rumours regarding a possible switch back to a Windows-based desktop environment. The answer to the inquiry shows that there is no factual basis for the claims made by first mayor and second mayor.

GCC 4.9.2 released

This release is a bug-fix release, containing fixes for regressions in GCC 4.9.1 relative to previous releases of GCC.

The incoming European Commissioner Andrus Ansip declares his support for free software

By April, from October 8th

During the course of his European Parliament hearing, Andrus Ansip, the designated EU Commissioner for the Digital Single Market, expressed his support for free software several times. April hopes that this is a sign towards the implementation of proactive policies in favour of free software.

Future European Commissioner Günther Oettinger refuses to answer on free software

By April, from October 1st

In the course of his hearing by the European Parliament, Günther Oettinger, the EU Commissioner-designate for Economy and Digital Society, deliberately refused to answer an MP's question on Free Software.

Join the FSF and friends in updating the Free Software Directory

From October 30th

Tens of thousands of people visit directory.fsf.org each month to discover free software. Each entry in the Directory contains a wealth of useful information, from basic category and descriptions to version control, IRC channels, documentation, and licensing. The Free Software Directory has been a great resource to software users over the past decade, but it needs your help staying up-to-date with new and exciting free software projects.

To help, join our weekly IRC meetings on Fridays. Meetings take place in the #fsf channel on irc.gnu.org, and usually include a handful of regulars as well as newcomers. Everyone's welcome.

The next meeting is Friday, November 7 from 2pm to 5pm EST (19:00 to 22:00 UTC). Details here:

25 new GNU releases in the last month (as of October 25, 2014):

To get announcements of most new GNU releases, subscribe to the info-gnu mailing list: http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/info-gnu. Nearly all GNU software is available from http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/, or preferably one of its mirrors (http://www.gnu.org/prep/ftp.html). You can use the url http://ftpmirror.gnu.org/ to be automatically redirected to a (hopefully) nearby and up-to-date mirror.

This month, we welcome Cole Johnson as the new maintainer of GNU Solfege, and Eric Blake as a new co-maintainer of GNU gperf (in addition to his many other GNU contributions).

A number of GNU packages, as well as the GNU operating system as a whole, are looking for maintainers and other assistance: please see http://www.gnu.org/server/takeaction.html#unmaint if you'd like to help. GNU Toolchain update

The GNU toolchain refers to the part of the GNU system which is used for building programs. These components of GNU are together often on other systems and for compiling programs for other platforms.
